Xarelto Safety Alert: Mounting Reports of Bleeding Side Effects and Death

On September 10, 2013, Reuters announced that German magazine, Der Spiegle, reported that Bayer is facing a growing number of reports of potentially deadly side-effects from its drug, Xarelto. According to Reuters, the magazine cited data from federal authorities, including 72 cases of death in the first eight (8) months of 2013. 58 cases of death were reported in 2012. Reuters further stated that Xarelto, which was co-developed with Johnson & Johnson, is expected to be a blockbuster drug. Xarelto, and other blood thinners such as the dangerous drug Pradaxa, and Warfarin, all carry a risk of bleeding. However, unlike Warfarin, Xarelto and Pradaxa are expecially dangerous because there is no antidote to the bleeding. If a patient suffers a puncture wound or internal hemorrhaging while on Xarelto, the patient faces a risk of bleeding to death. It’s reported that Johnson & Johnson and Bayer are researching ways to make Xarelto safer.
