Roundup was first sold commercially by Monsanto in 1974. The chemical in Roundup which is implicated as a carcinogen is glyphosate, which kills weeds by blocking enzymes that regulate plant growth.

NBC news reports that  University of Washington scientists found that agricultural workers who use a lot of glyphosate suffered a 41% higher risk of contracting non-Hodgkin lymphoma over their lifetimes than people who used it infrequently and/or non-users.

NBC news further stated that about 2 out of every 100 Americans develop non-Hodgkin lymphoma, but people who are highly exposed to glyphosate, the disease rate jumps to 2.8 per 100. Click the following link for the NBC news report: https://www.nbcnews.com/health/health-news/popular-weed-killer-s-alleged-link-cancer-stirs-widespread-concern-n989721

Monsanto’s failure to warn of the risks of Roundup has produced a veritable public health crises, resulting in non-Hodgkin cases nationwide. The glyphosate problem has given rise to over 18,000 claims, and jury verdicts totaling $2.4 billion dollars. Reuters reported that Bayer AG (purchaser of Monsanto and its liabilities) is proposing to pay as much as $8 billion to settle more than 18,000 U.S. Roundup lawsuits  according to people familiar with the negotiations. While it has limited efficacy, it’s recently been associated with maculopathy. Macular degeneration is a progressive condition which unfortunately often leads to blindness.

A 2018 report, the Review of Ophthalmology described unique macular pigment changes observed in six patients receiving this therapy for interstitial cystitis. This showed a medication toxicity necessitating further study. Emory Eye Center investigators subsequently demonstrated that macular degeneration is strongly associated with chronic PPS exposure, not the interstitial cystitis itself. The Kaiser Permanente study also provides additional data supporting the increased risk.

The studies described in the Review of Ophthalmology  https://www.reviewofophthalmology.com/article/clinical-pearls-for-a-new-condition have raised very troubling concerns about Elmiron toxicity and the public health implications. Thousands of patients are at risk of blindness.

Yet the label does not warn of this risk of macular degeneration and blindness.
